Descripción

Theory-driven approaches are commonly used in Mandarin aspect studies (Klein et al. 2000, Lin 2006). They enable fine-grained qualitative analyses and insightful hypotheses induced from limited examples. However, they face theoretical caveats as the theories may have hidden or conventional concepts/assumptions. Such concepts/assumptions, which need testing cross-linguistically, are imposed to Mandarin and could cause distorted interpretation of Mandarin data, risking circular reasoning problem. Furthermore, taking the perspective of one language that provides the terminologies for comparison, theory-driven cross-linguistic studies are generally unidirectional. This study shows how a parallel translation corpus can be used for exploring the semantics of Mandarin aspectual forms in a theory-neutral way through bidirectional cross-linguistic comparison. Mandarin is morphologically tenseless but has rich aspectual forms, while many European tense forms are an amalgamation of tense and grammatical aspect. Exploring how Mandarin aspectual forms are related with the tense forms helps in clarifying the semantics of the former and revealing the interaction between aspect and tense cross-linguistically. We thus extended a corpus of translations of the French novel L’Étranger (Authors, 2020) with Mandarin data. The corpus consists of the first three chapters of the novel and translations in Mandarin, English, German, and Spanish. Tense use in the European data and aspectual forms in the Mandarin data were annotated purely based on form, without applying any semantic theory. We noticed particular European tenses to co-occur, suggesting cross-linguistic
semantic steadiness, for which we assigned abstract tense labels (e.g. past perfective := ). Here, we focus on the five most frequent combinations, altogether representing 376 contexts (...)
