Coordinative Aspect of Pragmatic Markers Use in the Corpus of Russian Spoken Dialogical Discourse

Ekaterina Troshchenkova, Olga Blinova (Saint Petersburg State University -SPBU-)

Descripción

The study is a part of the project supported by the RNF grant #18-18-00242 «System of pragmatic markers in Russian everyday speech» based on a corpus Russian Everyday Speech “One Speech Day” (ORD), which is assembled on the principle of “Holter monitoring” volunteer informants, when their entire speech communication is recorded during the day, thus, allowing the researches to get sound recordings of everyday speech in a natural situation of communication.
The study is aimed at developing a methodology to check for the presence of communicative alignment in PMs as applied to spontaneous Russian oral dialogical discourse and further analyze its specific features taking into account a number of factors that can support or interfere with priming, such as maintaining one topic, the length of the speakers' utterances, the number of previous uses of the same marker by S1, individual preferences of the speakers and their general history of previous interactions.
The two PMs from different functional groups have been chosen for the analysis and comparison: a boundary marker with a typical pace-making function “koroche/koroche govorya” (in brief) and a approximator “kak by” (as it were). Macro-episodes from ORD (a total duration of about 57 h.) have been analyzed according to the following parameters: • the duration of the communicative macro-episode, the total number of PMs, • the number of PMs in the S1 contribution, •the number of PMs in the S2, S3 or S4 contributions, • the number of PM uses in the S1 speech, observed before the first appearance of the PM in the S2 speech, •the moments of PM's appearance in speaking, • “distance” between utterances with PM.
The quantitative analysis of the dialogues according to these parameters, supported with some elements of qualificative analysis of speakers’ contributions, verified the general fact of alignment, so that the specific aspects of it could be discussed in relation to the markers with different functions. Special attention is paid to the Fmean values of PM use, calculated relative to the total length of the episodes in seconds, depending on whether the PM is used only by one speaker or several speakers. Two other important issues are average time distances between the utterances with the PM depending on the number of speakers using the PM in the macro-episode (two or three for koroche; two, three or four for kak by) and average number of uses for the PM by the previous speakers before the first PM use by S2/3/4. This allows to see a kind of triggering when multiple PM use by some interlocutors encourages the others to continue using the same PM.
